John 14:27. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

Augustana Congregational Council

The congregational council provides planning, direction and leadership, and “hand-on-work” to foster the life of the congregation. Its responsibilities are grouped into three areas:

  • Worship and Word (see below)

  • Service (see below)

  • Administration (see below)

Members of council are elected to a three-year term, and then choose the position or area of interest and responsibility in which they wish to serve.

Worship & Word

This committee functions in two areas. It works with and supports the Pastor in suggesting orders of service and liturgies that will enhance the worship experience of our congregation. In addition it makes suggestions to and supports those who are developing special services through the course of the year (Mid-week Lenten services, Advent services, etc.). It also provides input on advertising for such services and as a committee of the church council discusses funding and other needs so that a lively worship life is possible at Augustana.

Secondly, the committee works to support the Pastor and others in the development and provision of educational experiences in our congregation. Such experiences are seen to include Bible studies (Advent Bible study, Lenten Study) , Sunday school and other kinds of education for our congregation. Once again it provides input on resources - materials, music, persons, funding - needed so that such experiences might enrich all of our lives. Thus the committee meets bi-monthly (approximately) to support and oversee the worship and Christian educational aspects of our life at Augustana.

Service

The Service Committee consists currently of three members. During the past year they have done some visiting and are now working on the new church directory, which includes distributing forms which need to be signed in order for the name, number and address of each member to be published in consideration of the privacy concerns currently at work in our society. This work should be done by mid February. Early in the year the committee spent significant time reviewing and updating the church inventory of all of the church belongings. A copy of the inventory has since been completed and secured. These are the types of roles that this committee takes on within the context of Augustana Lutheran church and their work is greatly appreciated.

Congregational Administration Committee

Responsibilities of the Congregational Administration Committee are as follows and will include input from other church committees, such as treasury, services and council.

  • Priority would be for the well-being of the church building, allowing for the safety of all members and visitors so they may have access for the services, including children, seniors and the handicapped.

    • All church property outside the building, including the parking lot, yard care in both summer and winter: including lawn trimming and sidewalk snow clearing.

    • Hire contractors to do maintenance and work as required.

    • To make sure our insurance policy gives us the proper coverage for both the inside and outside of the church property.

  • Pastoral support such as wages, housing and funding to be available for his work in the congregation.

  • Negotiate church building use with other community congregations, and small groups as to user fees and insurance coverage.

  • Be part of budget committee to establish a yearly operating budget tailored to past year’s budget and propose and carry out projects for the forth coming year (such as building maintenance) which will include extra ordinary funding from income from parking lot rentals and other building user fees.

  • We try to keep God’s House neat and welcoming to all who come.
